On Monday, October 19th, Orbmagazine was at the Park Avenue apartment of Jeanne Lawrence to meet Alison Carlson, the San Francisco dynamo who just authored an elegant coffee-table book called Churchill: The Man Within. It contains previously unseen photographs of the British statesman, plus some of his pithy epigrams. Also there was Phil Reed, OBE, a witty and erudite man who is director of the Churchill Museum Cabinet War Rooms in London.
We bumped into banking executive Valentin Hernandez and his wife Yaz, the Puerto Rican-born hamburger heiress who is chairwoman of F.I.T. Couture Council. Dressed to the nines, they said they were headed downtown to Cipriani Wall Street, where Denise Rich was holding her annual Angel Ball.
There the Hernandezes joined 900 other guests in mingling, toasting Heidi Klum, dining, toasting Usher, dancing, table-hopping, toasting Patti LaBelle, and bidding on auction items. Over $3.6 million was raised by Denise and jeweler Lorraine Schwartz to benefit Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research.
When they left the party at midnight, the traffic jam outside was insane. Hundreds of vehicles in bumper-to-bumper gridlock in the narrow lanes of Wall Street. Nothing was moving. Limos were immobile. It was impossible to summon a taxi, much less an Uber.
What to do? What any debonair pair would do—they descended into the subway, snagged a #5 express train in two minutes and were home in twenty. Yaz reports they had a delightful journey.
